from the recent deaf digest:

"NEWS OF THE WEEK
We have several charter schools for the deaf in the Midwest
and Western parts of USA. One of them, Clerc Academy, at Tucson, Arizona, will not be operational for the 2002-2003 school year. Sources have cited problems in getting funding."

I took a visit to the AZ Charter school listing website and couldn't find "Clerc Academy."

see for yourself: http://www.asbcs.state.az.us/asbcs/SchoolS...archResults.asp

There IS a Laurent Clerc Elementary School in Tucson AZ operated by the AZ school for the Deaf.

I do not know if this is the school being referred to in the deaf digest article.

Here are a few things you should know about charter schools:

Funding from these schools are often diverted from public schools (and/or state-funded). In order to keep the funding, the Charter Schools MUST meet the academic standards agreed to when the charter is signed. If they fail to meet the standard at renewal time, the funding is stopped.

While deaf digest cites "funding problems" as the reason for the closing, it may actually be "academic" problems.

Jake,

http://www.asbcs.state.az.us/asbcs/SchoolD...?ctds=108765001

Laurent Clerc is not operated by ASDB though... It is just a Charter school that receive funding from State only if have enough students attending.. and it turned out not enough students coming in (it could be that most student were promoted to grade not offered at Clerc)

Yes, they are closed for this year.

It has nothing to do with acamedic problem or fudning problems. just not enough students going there...

boult, i had a converstation with a AZ friend before the LC school opened and knew about the hearing/deaf kids experiement at the school. about 3 years ago I heard that they had trouble attracting hearing kids and staff turnover was discouraging deaf parents. of course all this is hearsay . . .
