Ever wonder what the universe and history would be like if history took a huge 180-degree turn?

Right now I'm doing Harry Turtledove and his Alternate History. His "Great War" series focuses on an alternate version of World War I. Strange things do happen in the world of alternate history like the Confederate States winning the Civil War, the US allying itself with Imperial Germany during World War I, scenarios in which the Axis won World War II instead of the Allies.

Even though its just fiction, but it does provide a really good read of the "What if famous events were reversed"....

Go over to Amazon and look up the master of Alternate History, Harry Turtledove:

My Blog

I'm a fan of temporal displacement (time travel) stories myself. I will definitely consider Mr. Turtledove's series when I'm done with my current reading list. I always pick up his books whenever I'm in Borders/Waldenbooks, but just haven't purchased one yet. Any good starting point, Sablescort??

Do you remember a movie in the 70's or 80's when the U.S.S. Nimitz sails into a vortex and ends up one week before Pearl Harbor? I really enjoyed that movie a lot, especially the dogfights between American F-14 Tomcats vs. Japanese Zeros. Coolest!!

Wouldn't that be "The Philadelphia Experiment"? It may be close but no cigar perhaps..... I'll look it up on IMDB.

However back to the starting point.....

Start with "How Few Remain" since it's alternate Civil War and its the jump-off point for the "Great War" series beginning with "American Front" and working up to "Walk in Hell". The next series after "Great War" is "American Empire" (Hint: think 1920's German Weimar Republic/1930's Third Reich transplanted to the Confederate States) BTW these series are not related to temporal displacement/time travel. Next up following "American Empire" is Turtledove's new alternate WWII series (Hardback just came out last month)

Also dont forget to pick up "Guns of the South" with time travelers arming General Lee's boys with AK47's! It is independent of the "Great War" series making it a standalone book.

Next series is a blend of SF with WWII.....Quirky but weird...LOL!

thank you banjo....saved me time and scratching head. I figured it would be Philadelphia Experiment but I remembered USS Philadelphia was a battlecruiser while USS Nimitz is an aircraft carrier.

Philadelphia Experiment was almost the opposite, a man from the WWII period went missing and found himself in the future.

imagine if the black voters purged from the FL voting rolls were permitted to vote in 2000. The economy would still be soaring, bin laden would be befuddled at the peaceful overtures from the Gore admin, all Americans would have healthcare, Congress would overwhelmingly pass a tax cut because the budget surplus was getting out of hand. Saddam Hussain would mysteriously disappear (blackhawk helicopters were seen leaving the area) and international $$$ flowed in to rebuild the country.

How about one that NEITHER Gore nor Bush won in 2000? (IMG:http://www.deafonline2.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

Or....Clinton losing after his first term because of a great prosecutor that uncovered his Arkansas peccadillos AND had a great witness portfolio.

Now y'all are talkin'!

Lemme throw in "Fatherland" by Robert Harris:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...=books&n=507846

That one details the Third Reich in 1964.....It was also made into a HBO 1st-run movie starring Rutger Hauer.

I do recall Fatherland....

I also recognized the cars used in that movie. They were actually Wartburgs made in East Germany. (IMG:http://www.deafonline2.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

those wartburgs....yeah in the book they used stretch 4 door versions of the original VW Bugs! (too bad those 4 door Bugs doesnt exist in our real time-line!)

How good it is to let imagination run wild with alternate history...

No, they were not 4 door versions of the original VW Bugs. I am absolutely positive they were Wartburgs made in the DDR (East Germany). An interesting tidbit: they were sold in the U.S. in 1961 and 1962, but.. lack of popularity meant their demise.

Or did you mean just in the book, not in the movie?

Wartburgs were known as the Eisenbachs back then, I believe.. during the Greater Reich times.

I was talking about the stretched Bugs that was in the book version of Fatherland.

However its understandable for the Wartburgs to be in the movie version (IMG:http://www.deafonline2.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)
