Hello everyone,

This is Sana posting from the American University of Sharjah, UAE. I am a senior Computer Science student and I am working on my graduation project which involves developing a new technology to make communication between deaf and hearing people easier. The project is still in its very beginning and it will take a long time to be finalized and sold to public but the main idea is a device which can detect and translate sign language into voice. However, until we reach that stage there are still many concerns and obstacles we have to solve which I was hoping you could help us through. So if you can please answer the following questions, your replies would be highly appreciated:

1- Do you like the idea?
2- Do you think it is useful, and would you use such a device?
3- Would you like it to be portable? or is it hard to carry a device around (hopefully size of pager)
4- Would you like it to have a built in cell phone?
or in other words, If you were to design it, how would it look like?

I know these questions are a bit general, but we are hoping we can brainstorm better with your ideas...
Thanks a lot (IMG:http://www.deafonline2.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/good.gif)

Sana.

While it's a nice idea, be awsre that ASL does not equal English. You will first need to figure out the translation issue between the two languages.
I'm sure others can give examples (my ASL is bad - just know some signs).
