Have ya'll ever taken an Ethics class? Here's some questions from an Ethics Class...what would you say? (for the record, I am not enrolled in an Ethics class!)

Question 1: You meet some friends at a bar and find yourself seated beside a rather attractive person. during the course of the evening, you have an enjoyable conversation and you promise to call that person to set up a date. When the person gets up to leave, you suddenly realize that he/she is physically handicapped.
Do you still call for the date?

Question 2: You have just earned a degree in Chemistry. Your best job offer comes from a laboratory that does experiments in chemical warfare. You do not agree with this practice, but you also realize that if you turn down the job, they will hire someone else who might do the job 'too well'.
Do You take the Job?

Yes and yes. in the case of the latter, what chemist would turn down a job to work with cutting edge technology?

Yes on both counts.

Former: A girl is a girl is a girl. Of course if she's lacking in the brains department (not due to handicap), I'd be a bit disappointed.

Latter: Better J. Robert Oppenheimer than the loyalists of Hitler.

Thanks- reason I asked is these same questions were posed to me- I had the same answers you did. Then the questions were given again to me with additional details. I may have changed my answers. Did you?

1.) When the attractive person gets up after you've promised to call for a date, you realized that he/she has a missing limb due to leprosy. Knowing that it is contagious, do you still follow thru with your promise?

2.) When you arrive at work, you find that your employer wishes to you design weapons of mass destruction that are designed to maim, multilate and kill as many people as possible. You know they will be sold to the government and chances are, they will be used.

Are your answers the same?

Well, there was a trick at the end. I said yes to #1, no to #2 and changed both to no the second time.

It was given to me this way so I make no claims. It's just questions on ethics! (I guess they do this at school, I don't know)

1). The leprosy issue: This is a personal choice issue, however leprosy is contagious and incurable. You may risk a disease for life someone you may not really like.

2). The weapon of mass destruction you have developed may be used against your own country. Once it is developed, it becomes attractive to all kinds of terrorists, political movements (that you may or may not agree with) and quietly insane people. Think about anthrax. Supposed it had been smallpox or something worse. Apparently there was a lot of security lapses. Now your weapons of mass destruction is running loose in the USA! Or a future president turns out to be insane and uses it on Canada. (there was no options to discuss the powers of Congress, etc.)

AIDS is contagious and incurable too, but many people continue to put their lives at risk by having unsafe se* with an infected partner or sharing a needle.

If you asked me if it was unethical for your date to hide from you the fact that she had leprosy then I would say YES!!!

DOn't want to get into the war thing...remember I am a bonafide Democrat!!!!(IMG:http://www.deafonline2.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

LP, you can be a bondafide democrat! (IMG:http://www.deafonline2.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I'm one of those people that actually doesn't care what other people believe in as long as it is not truly stupid. (i.e., they want Saddam for President HERE). The world would be boring if we were all poured out of the same mold, wouldn't it?

I think it would be interesting to take an Ethics class but wonder how they set up all the rules. I mean there's a lot of "what if's" that go into all these questions.... It's not as simple as just posing the question and having it answered.

Yep...you're right there are a lot of "what ifs"with ethics! What if I were a Muslim woman...I would have been stoned to death years ago when I left a no good deadbeat husband who couldn't keep his pants zippered!! (after only 7 months of wedded bliss!!!)

If I were a Muslim woman I would have been stoned to death for refusing to wear a burka! And for *talking back* to my father, brother and husband, whatever that means. (IMG:http://www.deafonline2.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I remember reading somewhere that your chances of acquiring HIV via unprotected sex with random partners (that you do not know if they do or do not have the virus) goes somewhere in 1 to five hundred. Interesting.

And my answers would be #1. Yes and #2. Yes. I like to remain consistent with my take on life. My reasoning still exists as it did, though I admit I would feel a bit more cautious on both counts. E.g. if I'm involved with the project I reserve the ability to sabotage it if need be.

And on #1, Hmm, my sentiments are congruent to that of Jake.
